A stunning large art glass serving bowl from Tapio Wirkkala's iconic 'Paadar' range - similar to Ultima Thule but with heavily textured vertical stepped sides. Designed in 1970 and produced by Iittala glassworks in Finland until 1976. This is early 1970s vintage and comes with its original vintage leaflet.
It's the biggest of Paadar's bowl, most likely intended as a fruit bowl. Suitable for presenting salads, fruit, trifle etc. Icy patterned vertically textured sides, like Wirkkala's 1970s textured vases, with melting ice rounded bobble bottom and flat polished rim. Fab design, a Modernist iconic design statement. Heavy and high quality crystal-content glass, bright and clear and sparkly in the sun.
Good condition for age and era. No external chips or nibbles, very good on display with good rim. One internal slither scar or burst bubble of sharp glass down from the rim (shown), which may well be a moulding flaw. The bowl feels fragile and I'm amazed it's survived for 50 years.
23cm wide max x 10.5cm tall. A statement sized centrepiece art glass bowl.
