A tentacle or fossil patterned Bernard Rooke sculptural pottery vase, most likely made in Suffolk, England in the 1960s or 1970s. The handmade rounded vase/pot has vertical textured stripes that resemble octopus tentacles and rows of blocks - very much in a brutalist style. The distinctive earthy neutral colours and shapes are typical of 1960s/1970s studio pottery. Speckled beige glazed uppers, dripping downwards, with brown lowers. It's a heavy rough stoneware type clay. Rooke set up a studio in London with Alan Wallwork in 1960, and produced many lamp bases and sculptural vases. The lamp bases were popular and more mass produced and have proved a mainstay until the present day. The sculptures exercised his artistic talents to the full - this vase falling into the latter category. He moved to larger premises in Suffolk in 1967, and continues to this day with his son. I don't know if this vase is from London in the 1960s era, or Suffolk from the 1970s. This is a unique handmade vase - which reflects its studio pottery nature - are similar to works from other studio potteries from the 1960s/1970s time such as Louis Hudson, Bob Dawe, Tremain, etc. Would make a fab addition for any collector of vintage studio pottery and would complement any retro, vintage, 1970s, or mid century modern interior. In excellent condition, a really nice collectable example. It's probably more suited to display in a collection. No maker's marks. A small to mid size - 11.5cm x 11.5cm x 9.5cm. Includes P&P to the UK.
