A vintage studio pottery rare (and unique) pin dish by Rye Pottery, Sussex. The early base stamp and red clay dates it to a 1950s mid century Rye dish - yet fun and ahead of its time with its unusually bright colours. Rye Pottery was John Cole and Walter Cole. Walter (Wally) was responsible for creating the ceramics and running the pottery while John made the designs and created the patterns and decorations. As their work became increasingly popular, the Coles began to employ and train other staff - throwers David Sharp, Dennis Townsend, Raymond Everett, David Smeed and Jim Elliott who were later joined by Pam Goddard and June Woolley. Wheel thrown and glazed white, the dish has indigo, deep green, blue, green, yellow and red stripes carefully painted on while rotating, then fine sgraffito lines have been scratched in, like a spider web. This is a small dish, likely a one-off. 10cm wide - best for display and for a collector rather than use. In very good condition with no real signs of age. It has its handmade quirks and burst bubbles etc - see photos. No chips or crazing. No exact maker's marks so it's hard to know who this fab design was by. Price includes P&P to the UK. (I have more Rye Pottery, just ask).
