A super 1960s vintage Portmeirion Pottery Cypher wider and lower coffee/tea cup and saucer...
Designed by Susan Williams-Ellis, this is an iconic mid century design. Produced from 1964, Cypher was designed using the new Serif shape (the Serif shape provided an alternative to the attenuated shape of Totem). The design was named Cypher as the pattern resembled undeciphered inscriptions, inspired by ancient Minoan art from Crete. It features raised textured geometric aztec-like patterns, striped sides and a pointy handle. This range continued until 1973, so this is circa 1960s vintage.
Rare and stylish 'Pewter Blue' colourway, which is a fabulous dark colour (but this is more dark graphite grey) with a good shine. Cypher was produced in green (aka mustard), brown, pewter blue and white. The most common colour seems to be greeny mustard.
Cup - 8cm diameter, 9cm at the rim, 6cm tall (most cups are the taller slimmer shapes). Saucer is 14.5cm wide. Stamped to the base of the cup.
It's in very good condition for the age with no chips or cracks or crazing, no real signs of use. It is in good clean condition - probably only been on display. Some fine marks to the saucer. Great collector's collectable and displayable condition - more for display than practical use!
Price includes P&P to the UK.
