A Dalecarlian horse or Dala horse (Swedish: Dalahäst) is a traditional carved, painted wooden statue of a horse originating in the Swedish province of Dalarna (Dalecarlia). The original meaning behind the carved Swedish Dala horses may be unknown, but today the painted wooden Dalecarlian horse is essentially a symbol of the country of Sweden itself. They're often given as friendship gifts. Every Dala horse is unique. This example is a vintage original (1960s-1970s) and is made by Nils Olsson, brother of Gannas Olsson. The original label reads "Akta Dalahemslojd, Nils Olsson, Hemslojd Ab, S-790 52 Nusnas, Sweden". Made in Sweden, hand carved from carefully selected pine, hand painted and varnished. The colours are ochre, khaki green, red, sky blue and off-white, over black, and the finish is glossy. He stands 4" tall or 10cm. He is in very good condition for the age with no chips or splinters, see photos. There are some rougher tooling areas - part of the handmade workmanship. Free P&P to the UK.
